British boxing could be boosted by arrival of £1.2 billion venue for major events as changes made

West Ham’s London Stadium could be about to become a major player in hosting British boxing events.
Stadium fights for the sport on British soil have become the norm, with the likes of Anthony Joshua , Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois regularly holding events in front of mega crowds.
Wembley Stadium was traditionally the main host for big fights, but the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has also become a major player in London after its construction in 2019.
Fury and Joshua will meet in arguably British boxing’s biggest ever event on December 11 but under the roof of the 80,000 seater Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
London Stadium to become host for boxing events
However, a new arrival is imminent of the London Stadium formerly known as the Olympic stadium which was built for the London Games in 2012 and is now valued at £1.2 billion.
A report from City AM has suggested that plans are being put in place to ensure the stadium is an attractive prospect to host boxing events.
Under current regulations, the stadium can only host 60,000 spectators for sporting events which is believed to include fight nights.
However it is understood that operators of the tax-payer venue LS185 are pushing to ensure boxing is instead listed as an entertainment event, pushing the permitted capacity to 85,000.
London Stadium bosses are understood to be pushing hard for the change, which would relax restrictions and make it the second largest venue for boxing in the country.
They believe it can make them a legitimate rival to Wembley Stadium, while helping pay back losses accrued by main lease holder West Ham’s relegation to the EFL Championship.
Current running costs are of £19 million per year to the British taxpayer, and the lucrative boxing events will go some way into making the iconic new-build stadium more popular.
It would see an opportunity for even bigger gate revenue for boxing promoters, given the extra fans who would be able to attend.
What fights could land at the London Stadium?
There could be a whole host of big events on the table, should the changes be made by 2027.
Joshua and Fury have both suggested they would continue fighting next year after their blockbuster clash.
And Dubois is eyeing the winner in what would be a big clash for multiple heavyweight world titles.
Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr have both teased a trilogy clash , with their first two bouts selling out the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2025.
Benn has also expressed interest in facing Conor McGregor , in what would also likely be a stadium event.
Several West Ham supporting boxers are also interested in making their bows in front of a home crowd.

Matchroom Boxing’s George Liddard in particular has spoken about his ambitious plans to headline an event.
He will need to continue to build his profile and push through to world level before any bout is entertained.
