Colts player asks for trade amid fire sale
The Indianapolis Colts could be preparing for another major roster move ahead of the NFL trade deadline, with wide receiver Josh Downs reportedly requesting a trade as the team continues to move key players. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Downs has attracted interest from multiple teams and officially requested a trade away from Indianapolis on Wednesday. The development comes after the Colts traded two Pro Bowl players, suggesting the franchise could be reshaping its roster following a disappointing start to the 2026 season. With the November 10 NFL trade deadline approaching, Downs could become the latest established player to leave Indianapolis as the organization considers its options. MORE: Bears’ Montez Sweat says ‘I never want to cheat’ in response to his suspension for illegal substance   Downs attracts interest from multiple teams Downs has recorded 26 receptions for 307 yards through the Colts’ first seven games this season but has yet to score a touchdown. The 25-year-old is in his fourth season with Indianapolis and is approaching the end of his current contract, making him a potential trade candidate before he becomes a free agent. His production declined last season, when he recorded a career-low 566 receiving yards and four touchdowns across 16 games. However, his experience and receiving ability could still appeal to teams seeking additional offensive weapons for the second half of the campaign. The Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are among the teams that could be interested in acquiring Downs, although no deal has been confirmed. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Indianapolis may have an opportunity to secure draft capital rather than risk losing the receiver in free agency without receiving compensation. MORE: Jerry Jones reveals Cowboys trade deadline plans   Colts continue trading away key players Downs’ reported trade request follows a busy period for Indianapolis, which traded two of its biggest names on Tuesday. Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson was sent to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick. Meanwhile, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner joined the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round selection. Those moves have raised further questions about the Colts’ direction as they sit at 2-5 after seven weeks of the NFL season. Indianapolis will visit the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, looking to improve its record while uncertainty surrounds the roster. With the trade deadline nearing, Downs’ situation could become another significant storyline as the Colts weigh their options and potentially continue reshaping the team for the future. – Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter –
