Ex-Super Bowl MVP throws cold water on Steelers’ potential despite 5-2 start
Yahoo Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have started the 2026 NFL season with a 5-2 record, but Kurt Warner remains unconvinced about their playoff potential. The Super Bowl XXXIV MVP believes Pittsburgh’s offensive limitations could prevent it from competing with the AFC’s strongest teams.
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Warner questioned how far the Steelers could advance against high-scoring opponents such as Cincinnati, Kansas City and Buffalo.
“I don’t think it’s going to go very far when you look at the AFC,” Warner said.

The Hall of Fame quarterback identified Pittsburgh’s biggest concern as its inability to generate points consistently. He explained that offenses requiring long drives to score leave themselves vulnerable to mistakes and defensive pressure.
“That’s the challenge for the Steelers right now, is how do we generate points?” Warner asked.
Pittsburgh’s recent performances support his concerns. The Steelers scored 16 points against New Orleans in their 16-10 victory in Paris. Warner also pointed to their earlier struggles against Tampa Bay, when the offense needed defensive help to create scoring opportunities.
Steelers must find more explosive plays
Warner believes Pittsburgh needs more quick-strike touchdowns to become a legitimate playoff threat. Strong defenses can disrupt offenses that must sustain drives of 10 to 12 plays to reach the end zone.
“Good offenses have the ability to explode and have a one-play touchdown to change the complexion,” Warner explained.
He acknowledged running back Jaylen Warren’s ability to produce explosive plays. However, Warner argued that Pittsburgh cannot depend on those moments alone.
The Steelers have also struggled to score on the ground near the goal line. Warner highlighted that the team had recorded just one rushing touchdown during the season, a 50-yard run by Warren.
“If you can’t get into the red zone and be able to hand the football off and score again, offense just becomes really hard,” Warner said.

That issue could become increasingly important as Pittsburgh faces tougher opponents. A strong defense can keep games close, but the offense must provide more consistent support.
The Steelers’ 5-2 record gives them a solid foundation. However, Warner’s assessment raises a clear question: can Pittsburgh develop enough scoring explosiveness to compete with the AFC’s elite?
