Florida State's defensive keys vs. Boston College
Yahoo Sports
FSU hasn't had a good season on the defensive side of the ball, which is why defensive coordinator Tony White is no longer with the program. The only thing they've been consistent at is being inconsistent, and it's a huge reason why they're 3-5 on the year and currently on a three-game losing streak.
On Saturday, Florida State faces a Boston College Eagles offense that has its struggles as well, with scoring being a huge issue as they rank 111th in the nation. It will truly be a battle of subpar units when FSU's defense goes up against the Boston College offense, but somebody has to win in the end.
Here are five keys for FSU defensively versus Boston College.
Don't let Mason McKenzie beat them in multiple ways
McKenzie is a dual-threat type of quarterback that has nearly 2,100 yards of total offense on the season, with 638 being on the ground. Not only do they need to make him uncomfortable throwing by providing pressure, but they must also make sure he's not continuously moving the chains with his legs.
Limit their rushing total
Boston College averages 168.1 yards per game rushing and 4.1 yards a carry. For Florida State to be successful defensively, they need to make them as one-dimensional as possible and force McKenzie to throw the ball and get behind the chains. It will be a challenge, as FSU allows 176.5 yards per game on the ground, which is 111th in the country.
Be good on third down
The easiest way for an offense that struggles to score to gain confidence is moving the chains regularly. Boston College only converts 34.7% of its third-down attempts, ranking among the worst units in the country. The Seminoles' defense has to get off the field and prevent the Eagles from establishing a rhythm.
Get sacks against suspect pass blocking
Boston College has allowed 23 sacks in eight games so far this season. If Florida State's defense can get to McKenzie, who will make some questionable throws and provide opportunities for interceptions, they can end drives quickly and stay fresh throughout the game.
Grab some turnovers
The Eagles have committed only 10 turnovers this season. With that said, this needs to be a focal point for FSU, especially on the road. Setting up their offense with easy chances to score can allow them to control the game for four quarters.
