Panic Index: Newcastle boss can relax but Michael Carrick given 9/10 sack alert despite Man United comeback
TalkSport

Welcome to the Panic Index.
Every week, talkSPORT.com will measure a number of crises in the Premier League and assess the level of urgency required.
Who is blowing everything out of proportion? And who has every right to feel worried?
Each situation will be assigned a score out of ten. 1/10 = storm in a teacup. 10/10 = emergency board meeting.
Got it? Great. Let’s see who’s in trouble and who’s not…
Michael Carrick – 9/10
9/10 is ironically the number of matches Manchester United have not managed to win in recent months.
Red Devils boss Carrick is not out of the woods just yet despite his side coming from two-goals down against Roma to secure their first win in 10 matches .
While it might have bought him more time, ex-England midfielder Danny Murphy told talkSPORT: “I think we’re just waiting for the inevitable.”
Meanwhile, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook said: “I think he’s probably still on thin ice, but those headlines describing the victory as a lifeline are accurate.
“At half-time, I thought it was over for Michael Carrick . Honestly, I was in the stands with my nephew. If it wasn’t for him, I’d have left at half-time.
“I was so disgusted with that first-half performance. It was abysmal from Manchester United. So I’m not sure what Michael Carrick did at half-time to inspire that comeback.
“Was it the players who just finally decided, actually, we need to turn up and give something back to these fans who, by and large, have been very good this season?
“But either way, it was a brilliant second half. And you say it’s turned into one of the great nights at Old Trafford. And if you’re a Michael Carrick supporter now, you’ve got to hope it is a corner that’s been genuinely turned.”
Matthias Jaissle – 2/10
Matthias Jaissle’s job as Newcastle manager is not under immediate threat, talkSPORT understands.
The Magpies have lost five of their last seven games in all competitions, but the Newcastle hierarchy are aware Jaissle took on a big rebuild after replacing Eddie Howe in the summer.
Some Newcastle fans have turned on the German boss after two consecutive defeats at home without scoring.
But Jaissle did make a bright start, and after an underwhelming summer transfer window, ex-Premier League striker Darren Bent believes he deserves more time.
Bent said: “They’re not going to go down. But they are sliding in that direction.
“And to be fair, they have lost four, but they have won three. So there’s a few victories in there.
“I just think at this present time, it’s about stability for Newcastle. And if he’s the right man for the job then stick with him.
“There are going to be these type of problems. It’s very rare you get a manager coming like Eddie Howe and everything is just unbelievable.
“He gets you into the Champions League. He wins you your first trophy in forever. Then there’s another trip to the Champions League.
“It just doesn’t happen. And the strength of the Premier League every single season is getting harder and harder.”
Regis Le Bris – 8/10
Is this what second-season syndrome looks like?
Despite their success in Europe and the EFL Cup, Sunderland find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League.
Ex-Arsenal winger Perry Groves points towards a challenging run of November fixtures which could put Le Bris in danger.
Groves: “I think November is a massive month for Le Bris because they’ve got four out of the next five games at home. They play Chelsea at home and Spurs at home in the Premier League. Worst case, you’re going to need four points from that. They play Aston Villa away.
“But their form in Europa League and in the EFL Cup has been outstanding.
“It’s not that the players don’t believe in him. It’s not that they’re not trying to implement his philosophy. It’s just individual mistakes.
“Last season, Sunderland were very difficult to play against. They made it physical. They made it difficult for you.
“This season, they’re not. So they’ve collectively just dropped off. The reason I think Le Bris can turn it around is because he’s proved last season that he can manage in the Premier League and get a tune out of the players.”
Oliver Glasner – 7/10
The Nottingham Forest manager has just one win from his opening nine Premier League matches and talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham thinks he will be gone by Christmas .
Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis is not known for his patience with underperforming managers – and Glasner risked his wrath by challenging the club to sack him last weekend .
Nevertheless, ex-Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino believes Forest are playing a lot better than their points tally suggests.
Cascarino said: “It’s going to be hard because it’s going against the grain of what this owner thinks like… but I’d like to think he’s going to go, we need time.
“And there is evidence by watching Forrest that they are on the right road.
“I think they’re gradually going to pick themselves up and the table and get points. Because I think they’ve been a little bit unfortunate not to have more.”
Pierre Sage – 7/10
Rounding off the relegation zone are 18th-place Crystal Palace .
Replacing Glasner was never going to be an easy task, especially after a difficult summer transfer window.
And ex-Palace owner Simon Jordan , who once made these decisions himself at Selhurst Park, suggests Sage should get more time.
Jordan said: “I don’t know if he’s good enough, but I think he’s got to be given more time, because you’re just selling the best players all the time.
“Last year, you sold Marc Guehi from underneath Oliver Glasner , but you had to because it was going to be a free transfer.
“Maxence Lacroix went in the summer. You keep on losing players.
“Jean-Philippe Mateta, does he want to be there? Does he not want to be there?
“He’s got £50million Jorgen Strand Larsen, you know what I think of him…
“The bottom line is that I think it’s a difficult transition for him.
“And I don’t think it’s a Frank de Boer situation, where the players simply were not having him after four games and there were problems and Steve Parish had to step in.”
