EFL boss sent off for shock headbutt of opposition player to spark brawl on pitch

Oldham manager Micky Mellon was sent off for headbutting Sheffield Wednesday’s Callum Slattery on Sunday evening. Mellon completely lost his cool in a clash with Slattery during his side’s impressive FA Cup first round win over the Owls . With the game level at 1-1 heading towards the final five minutes, the Oldham boss found himself in the touchline altercation. Mellon appeared to grab Slattery by the neck and drag him closer to him as words were exchanged between the pair. But then the manager motioned his head towards the Sheffield Wednesday player , sending him to the ground. Players from both teams then rushed over as brawl broke out, with plenty of pushing and shoving occurring. Mellon was dragged away by coaching staff and Owls captain Barry Bannan while the players continued to scrap. Around a minute after things broke out into chaos, referee Martin Woods brandished a red card for the Oldham manager. He instantly turned to walk off, accepting the punishment and heading towards the stands to watch the match. Thankfully for Mellon, Oldham came out on top after the FA Cup first round tie went to extra time at Boundary Park. The game ended 1-1, with Wrexham loanee Davis Keillor-Dunn scoring to cancel out Will Sutton’s opener. However, in extra time, Calum Kavanagh netted the winner. It meant Mellon’s League Two side knocked out a team from the division above, putting their name in the hat. The draw for the second round of the FA Cup will take place on Monday, November 9 at approximately 6:45pm. Mellon will hope that any extra punishment for his headbutt and red card doesn’t keep him out of that tie in December.
