EFL managers separated at full time in furious touchline spat
Wolves and Portsmouth managers Cesar Peixoto and John Mousinho were involved in a heated altercation at full-time of their Championship clash. Emotions boiled over at the final whistle following the 1-1 draw at Molineux, as Terry Devlin’s 86th-minute equaliser snatched a point for Pompey. Wolves had taken the lead through Jordan James, before being made to settle for a draw as Mousinho’s side grabbed a late goal. The result appeared to leave Peixoto frustrated, as footage shows him angrily approaching Mousinho as the full-time whistle blows. He can be seen making a talking gesture with his hands whilst walking towards his Portsmouth counterpart, who responds by putting his hands on Peixoto and attempting to move him away. But this only appeared to anger the Wolves boss more, as he continued to appear animated whilst gesticulating at Mousinho. Other members of staff soon became involved in the heated altercation with players also appearing on the scene to separate the two. With others beginning to push and shove each other, Mousinho walked away from his opposite number as things calmed down. It isn’t clear what sparked the touchline spat, with Peixoto clearly the more angry of the two managers. The draw leaves Wolves – who were relegated last season – seventh in the table on 18 points, while Portsmouth are 13th, three points behind them with a tally of 15. Mousinho reveals Peixoto anger Speaking after the heated full-time scenes, Mousinho revealed that Peixoto had been angered by his vocal manner on the touchline. He told The News : “I shook the manager’s hand and then he said I talk too much. So I very politely told him that that’s probably what I do, that’s my job as head coach. He continued: “During the game, I got up to talk to the fourth official, I don’t know if you aren’t allowed to any more, I was told in no uncertain terms, quite a rude way, that I needed to sit down and not talk to the fourth. “I tried to point out that I didn’t know there had been a law change where I wasn’t allowed to speak to the fourth any more, that was it. “You know what I’m like, just let each manager speak to the fourth, just get on with your own job. “My job is quite difficult, I’m sure his job is quite difficult as well, let them get on with it. Let the staff do their own thing, stop interfering.” This wasn’t Mousinho’s first touchline altercation, having also been involved in a spat with Coventry boss Frank Lampard last season.
