Harry Redknapp claims Frank Lampard would be perfect candidate for ‘impossible job’
Harry Redknapp believes Frank Lampard would be the ideal fit for the England manager’s job. The iconic former Tottenham , Portsmouth and West Ham boss has tipped his nephew as a potential successor to Thomas Tuchel in charge of the national team . Redknapp backs Lampard for England After a miserable start to the season, Lampard has got Coventry up and running upon their return to the Premier League , and Redknapp is naturally willing him to keep them up – and maybe, ultimately, go on to bigger things in the world of management. In an interview with Henry Winter for FourFourTwo, Redknapp admitted he would like to see the FA ‘go English’ when they eventually need to appoint the next England manager. And he’s already thrown his weight behind Lampard for the so-called impossible job . “Absolutely. Frank would be a perfect candidate,” he said. “One hundred-odd caps for England. He know what it’s like to play in World Cups, Euros. He’s been there and done it all. “I’m sure, after this [post-Tuchel], we will look to go English again. I certainly hope so. Eddie Howe ‘s another one.” Lampard retired from international football back in 2014 as one of England’s most-capped players ever. The Chelsea legend featured 106 times for the Three Lions, having begun his club career under his uncle at West Ham. Redknapp, 79, is out of management these days, and he has bemoaned the lack of prominent opportunities for English coaches. “The problem is they don’t get the chance at big clubs to show what they can do,” he added. “Michael’s [Carrick – who Redknapp also gave his big break at West Ham] now got a job at Manchester United , but as a rule, we don’t see an Englishman get a top-six team. “They come into teams that are struggling, and then it’s hard for them to be a success. “You only have to look at who wins the league every year, who wins the cups every year. It’s not an English manager.” Has an English manager ever won the Premier League? Indeed, the Premier League title has still yet to be won by an English boss. Redknapp himself was the last Englishman to lift the FA Cup – with Portsmouth back in 2008 – with Howe the only Englishman since 2004 to do likewise in the EFL Cup, leading Newcastle to glory last year . That being said, the England job has still overwhelmingly been done by English managers. Tuchel, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier this year, is only the third foreign coach to take charge of the Three Lions after Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson.
