Texas Rangers’ Top Prospect Sebastian Walcott Healthy, Back In Form
Yahoo Sports

Sebastian Walcott might have made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers at age 20 this year. Instead, he missed most of the 2026 season rehabbing from elbow surgery.
The Bahamian batting star is back belting baseballs all over the field in the Arizona Fall League – where his troubles began in 2025.
Walcott played just one game for the Surprise Saguaros last fall, going 2-for-4 and scoring twice. But he complained that his right arm felt tired and sore. After being diagnosed with minor arm fatigue, the Rangers told him to go home and rest. When he reported for spring training, he said the arm still felt sore. Further tests showed a UCL tear and internal brace surgery was performed.
“It’s obviously not what we wanted to start camp,” Chris Young, the Rangers’ director of operations told MLB on February 12. “We were optimistic and hopeful, but again, I think the big picture outlook is that this is a very special player who is going to have a long, successful career. We’re going to get him right. We do a great job, especially with elbow injuries, and he’ll be better for it. He’s just a special, special person. I hate it for him, but I also know the experience of this is going to make him a better person and a better player in the long term.”
Walcott got $3.2 million to sign at age 16 in the 2023 international draft class. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound shortstop was immediately forecast to be the best player produced by his country, which has had only 10 MLB players. The best known is current New York Yankees infield star Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Walcott moved quickly through the Rangers system until getting hurt. He had a good 2024 season for the High-A Hickory (NC) Crawdads . He played in the 2025 All-Star Futures Game at age 19, when he hit .255 with 13 homers and 32 stolen bases in 124 games for Double-A Frisco .
Scouts believe his bat speed equates to 40-homer potential, as long as he improves his two-strike approach and does a better job in recognizing off-speed pitches.
He has 349 strikeouts in 329 minor-league games, but also 165 walks and career on-base percentage of .354. While that figure is way behind all-time MLB leaders Ted Williams (.482) and Babe Ruth (.474), it is comparable to another Hall of Famer, Ichiro Suzuki (.3548 over 19 MLB seasons).
Walcott gets out in front of even high-level fastballs, making him an extreme pull-side hitter. He’ll have to learn to take outside pitches the other way, like Milwaukee Brewers slugger Jackson Chourio did consistently during the 2026 postseason.
A move to third base or possibly the outfield, where his decent speed would play well, could be in the future, depending on how his arm recovers. Walcott had 24 errors in 88 games at short a year ago, leading many to project a position switch even before the injury.
The Comeback
Walcott was better than ever at the plate in 41 games this year following rehab. He made his season debut on July 14 in the Arizona Complex League. In two games, he went 3-for-6 with a homer.
Then he had six multi-hit games in his first nine outings at Frisco, including a 4-for-5 outing on July 24. He hit .322 overall in 37 games there.
Including a two-game test at Triple-A Round Rock to finish the season, Walcott hit .325 with 10 homers, 21 RBI and went 13-for-13 stealing bases in 41 games.
Walcott has just kept hitting in the Arizona sun. He talked about his grand slam on October 16 against Mesa. He has particularly tormented the Solar Sox. He had three hits and two RBI in a 13-2 win against them Wednesday .
He’s 8-for-9 on the basepaths this fall, where he has 13 RBI in 11 games for the Saguaros, hitting .273. He also has five errors in 53 innings over six games at shortstop.
The Future
No matter what Walcott or any players accomplish in the 2026 AFL, baseball in 2027 is likely to have all sorts of problems.
Everything could be on hold come December 1, when the collective bargaining agreement ends at 11:59 p.m. Team owners are expected to initiate a lockout if a compromise on a new plan is not met by then. Current talks are combative.
Baseball’s billionaire owners want a salary cap. Union leaders say absolutely not. Forbes.com staff writer Hank Tucker explains it all .
Walcott and other minor league players would not be locked out of reporting for spring training, however, and the 2027 minor-league season would proceed.
Should an agreement come before spring training and the regular big-leaguers are all available, the Rangers have some decisions to make. Current shortstop Corey Seager has five years left on a 10-year, $325 million deal. Given Walcott’s injury and error-prone play, will they move him to another spot?
Even without big-leaguers in camp, it will be interesting to see what Sebastian Walcott will be doing during spring training for the Texas Rangers.
