Cole Palmer should be nowhere near England squad but Thomas Tuchel selection has glaring flaw
Thomas Tuchel was right to omit Cole Palmer from his latest England squad because of a lack of commitment. That’s the view of talkSPORT’s Henry Winter , though he questioned why Eberechi Eze was selected amid strong competition for the no. 10 role. Palmer did not make it into the 25-man squad for the two upcoming Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain, both of which will be live on talkSPORT. The Chelsea star was not at the World Cup and, despite being picked in September, he withdrew due to injury . Tuchel revealed to talkSPORT that he did not speak to Palmer before leaving him out of his final squad of 2026. And when reflecting on the England head coach’s decision, journalist Winter agreed that the 24-year-old should not have got a call-up. Tuchel right to leave out Palmer “I don’t think Cole Palmer should be anywhere near the squad, I’m completely with Thomas Tuchel,” he said on Sunday Edition. “It’s nothing to do with the cut of his jib,” he added. “It’s to do with the fact that there’s clearly a talent there, but when he had the opportunity to report last time, the implication was that it was load management… “Chelsea’s preceding game (before England’s four Nations League games), he played 90 minutes. The first, I think, four Premier League games after the resumption of club football, Cole Palmer started. “I think it’s sad because we’ve seen with England what a talent he is. He played in a European final (against Spain) for England. “We saw in the first half of the Club World Cup for Chelsea when he took apart a very good PSG (side)… I’m just saying the ability is there, but it’s not simply about ability. “This is not playing for your club team. This is representing England. It’s not a right. It is an honour that gets bestowed… “The thing is, is that Cole Palmer has got to be absolutely flying and has got to be absolutely committed to reporting.” Winter also said: “I don’t know whether it’s a personality thing. Tuchel says, ‘Well, it’s not personal’. “But no, actually, I think it’s about England. It is about commitment. It is about turning up with a niggle. Morgan Rogers always reports. “Look at how Morgan Gibbs-White just rushed off from his holiday wherever he was with his partner in Dubai or whatever and they made a little video of it and it was actually kind of sweet. “And you want that, you absolutely want players to love reporting.” Winter then spoke on the depth of quality that Tuchel has in the no. 10 role with England, and suggested that Palmer would be looking at the inclusion of Arsenal man Eze. “The point is that England aren’t short at number 10. You’ve got Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, next cab off the rank, probably Gibbs-White. “Josh King as well. I know he can play either side, but he’s very much a 10, has been doing superbly for Fulham. “Where Cole Palmer must look at that squad and go, ‘Well, hang on a sec’, Eze is a great player, delivers for Arsenal, mainly in the North London derby. “Where is that loyalty to him from Tuchel? That is the one flaw in Tuchel’s argument. Otherwise, he’s completely right.”
