‘Just want to play’ – Steph Curry gets real about starting overtime on the bench alongside Draymond Green
Yahoo Sports

Steph Curry revealed that Draymond Green and he were initially frustrated for themselves after learning that the duo would be starting on the bench for the Golden State Warriors’ overtime win against the Orlando Magic.
The 38-year-old scored 41 points, while shooting 13-for-19 from the field. His performance in the clutch is what propelled the Warriors to take the game into overtime, as he scored 14 points in the fourth quarter alone. The four-time NBA champion added five of his points in the overtime period to help the Warriors get to a 126-119 win on the night.
It was his second 40-point performance of the season, and with this, he became the player with the most 40-point games aged 35 and above, surpassing LeBron James.
When the game went into overtime, there was a change in how the Warriors lined up, as they did not start Draymond Green and Curry. This decision shocked many, including the veteran duo.
Steph Curry said that he was confident about the unit that started overtime
Curry is arguably one of the most clutch players in modern era, and you would imagine is an almost guaranteed starter in overtime.
However, aged 38 and with the injuries he has had to face in recent years, the Warriors have been trying to limit the minutes he plays, and in the regulation period, Curry had already reached his designated quota.
This led Steve Kerr to decide to start him and veteran Draymond Green on the bench. They were only brought on the court with 3:48 minutes left, but the Dubs still managed to grab a win.
“It’s a very weird situation. I know I’m on somewhat of a minute watch and going to overtime coach (Steve Kerr) has on the board who’s going in to overtime, and it’s kind of always been a foregone conclusion me and Draymond (Green), if he’s not in foul trouble are going to be out there. Our names weren’t on there and obviously me and Draymond are going to have a reaction because we’re competitors and want to be out there,” said Curry to the reporters.
“The conversation and the energy was more frustration for us, not doubt in the unit that was going out there. We wanted to make sure they knew that, because they’ve been playing well all year, and those 90 seconds they got us a lead, and me and Draymond got to take a quick break. It matters in the big picture of the season. I wanted to echo that after the game because that’s a big deal. They can see our body language on the bench and you can kind of confuse that as we can go out there and do it, but it was more: ‘No, we just want to play.’ But it was confidence in their ability to go take care of business.”
Alongside Curry, Yaxel Lendeborg and Brandon Podziemski also had good performances against Magic. The young duo combined for 38 points. The bench also showed up for the Dubs, scoring 42 points.
The Warriors’ next game is against the New Orleans Pelicans. Curry and the team will be hoping to extend their winning streak to eight games and climb up the ladder in the Western Conference rankings.
