Oregon football is coming off a disappointing loss to UCLA , and quarterback Dylan Raiola’s struggles played a significant role in the defeat. However, ahead of the Ducks’ next matchup against Nebraska, head coach Dan Lanning has made it clear that Raiola will not automatically be handed the starting job. Instead, the coaching staff is prepared to hold a competition to determine who will lead the offense. Lanning confirmed that Oregon will open up the starting quarterback position if Dante Moore is unable to play against Nebraska this week. When asked about what the matchup against Nebraska could mean for Raiola, Lanning said that facing the program he previously played for could make the game an emotional experience for the quarterback. I know he’ll do that because he’s a pro.” Moore has been sidelined with a concussion suffered during Oregon’s game against USC. With the starting quarterback unavailable, Raiola stepped in against UCLA but struggled to deliver the performance the Ducks needed. Raiola completed just six of 19 passes for 43 yards and threw two interceptions.His disappointing outing eventually forced Lanning to turn to Brock Thomas in an attempt to spark the offense. Thomas offered a noticeable improvement, completing 11 of 15 passes for 156 yards and providing Oregon with a much-needed offensive boost late in the game. Despite his more productive performance, Thomas could not lead the Ducks all the way back. The loss has added more uncertainty to Oregon’s quarterback situation heading into the Nebraska game. Moore’s availability will be particularly important as the coaching staff evaluates its options following Raiola’s struggles against UCLA. Moreover, Thomas’ performance against the Bruins gives Lanning another reason to consider his backup quarterback. Thomas demonstrated that he could provide a spark when given the opportunity.
