Yankees making drastic changes to front office after another failed season
The New York Yankees are making front-office changes after another disappointing MLB season, with two experienced executives no longer expected to be part of Brian Cashman’s group in 2027. The moves represent a change within the Yankees’ baseball operations department after another season ended without a World Series championship. While Cashman is returning, the organization is beginning to reshape the group around him. MORE: Yankees legend doesn’t mince words in criticism of team’s roster construction Yankees not renewing Minaya and Sabean, but Cashman and Boone remain Minaya and Sabean both joined the Yankees before the 2023 season, bringing decades of front-office experience to Cashman’s staff. Sabean previously served as the general manager of the San Francisco Giants, while Minaya held general manager positions with the New York Mets and Montreal Expos. Sabean spent nearly two decades running the Giants and was in charge during their championship runs in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Before his time in San Francisco, Sabean also spent several years working within the Yankees organization. Minaya also brought extensive experience to New York after previously running the Mets and Expos. His relationships around the game were viewed as an asset to the Yankees, and he was reportedly involved in the club’s pursuit of Juan Soto and Max Fried. The Yankees’ own front-office directory currently lists Sabean as an executive advisor to the general manager and Minaya as a senior advisor in baseball operations. Not enough change despite another disappointing finish to a season The departures come as the Yankees face increasing pressure to make meaningful changes after another postseason disappointment. New York was eliminated in the ALDS, continuing a stretch in which the franchise has struggled to turn regular-season success into another championship. Cashman, however, is staying in place after agreeing to a new contract with the Yankees. Manager Aaron Boone is also returning, meaning the organization is making changes around its top baseball decision-maker rather than starting over at the top. That makes the decisions involving Minaya and Sabean particularly notable. Both executives were brought in as experienced voices to advise Cashman, and their departures will leave the Yankees without two former general managers who have been part of the organization’s baseball operations group since 2023. More changes could follow as the Yankees continue working through the offseason. For now, the first major front-office moves involve two veteran executives leaving, while Cashman remains in charge of setting the organization’s direction heading into 2027. —  Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter  —
