EFL boss sacked 10 games into season despite two promotions in three years
Bromley have sacked Andy Woodman after winning just two games in all competitions so far this season. Woodman, who had been in charge since March 2021, led the club to the League One for the first time in their history last term. That was their second promotion in three years, with manager Woodman taking them on a remarkable rise from non-league. However, since reaching League One , they’ve hit a stumbling block, with things appearing to be too much of a challenge. Woodman has been sacked amid a four-game losing streak in the league, with the club sitting 23rd after ten matches. The Ravens have won just two of their opening fixtures, losing six straight in all competitions since beating Huddersfield on September 19. They have not won any of their last four league outings, also losing to Brentford U21s and Crawley Town in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy. And Woodman’s last game in charge saw his side thrashed 4-0 at home to Russell Martin ‘s Leicester City on Tuesday night. Across his five-and-a-half year tenure as Bromley boss, Woodman took charge of 274 games, winning 117 and losing 76. He was the third longest serving manager in the entire EFL and Premier League combined. Bromley sack Andy Woodman Bromley confirmed the dismissal of their long-standing manager in a statement on Thursday morning. Owner and Chairman Robin Stanton-Gleaves said: “I would firstly like to offer my sincere thanks to Andy for all he has achieved during his time with us. View Tweet: https://t.co/EpsqdilUKL “It’s no surprise that this club has reached new heights and Andy has been fundamental in helping us achieve that. “I would like to reassure our supporters that we will be entering this new chapter with the same ambition and determination to keep moving this football club forward. “On a personal note, Andy has been a pleasure to work with, and I wish him all the best for the future.” Former player Byron Webster will be taking charge on an interim basis whilst the club appoint a permanent replacement. Woodman, who is Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman’s dad , was previously a goalkeeper coach and Head of Goalkeeping at Arsenal before being appointed as Bromley manager in 2021. His only previous managerial role before taking over at the Ravens came with semi-pro side Whitehawk. ‘I certainly won’t lie down’ Woodman’s sacking comes days after he said he was up for the fight of keeping Bromley in League One after a poor start. He had criticised his team for ‘gifting’ opponents goals after they were beaten by Leicester on Tuesday evening. “We’re just making rash decisions, without any pressure on us,” Woodman told BBC Radio London. “That’s the bit that’s frustrating me at the moment because that’s not what we’ve been built on. “We’re trying to find the answers, we’re grafting and we’re putting the hours in. Maybe it’s a bit of quality and confidence [we are lacking], but we’ve got to find the solution quickly. “I certainly won’t lie down and accept what I’m seeing.” But sadly for Woodman, he hasn’t been given more time to turn things around.
