NY host criticizes Kirk Herbstreit after broadcast mistake During the October 17, 2026, matchup in which No. 8 BYU defeated No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24, Herbstreit made an erroneous remark late in the contest. With the Fighting Irish trailing by four points and facing third-and-3 from the BYU 30-yard line with approximately 34 seconds remaining, Herbstreit said, “They’re still thinking of trying to win this thing in regulation.” Play-by-play partner Chris Fowler immediately responded, “Gotta get the end zone, down four.” A field goal would have narrowed the deficit only to 28-27, leaving Notre Dame still trailing and requiring a touchdown to take the lead in regulation. Herbstreit’s phrasing suggested he may have momentarily treated the margin as three points rather than four. The comment drew sharp criticism days later. On the October 22 episode of the Davey Mac Sports Program , New York radio host Dave McDonald criticized Herbstreit’s understanding of the situation. He said, “Kirk Herbstreit, you’re a f—ing air-headed bimbo twat! I f—ing hate you! This is Kirk Herbstreit, who is so stupid, he just likes to hear himself talk… Here’s Notre Dame down by four points against BYU. This is what Kirk Herbstreit says. He basically insinuates that Notre Dame’s not going to kick a field goal. ‘They’re being aggressive. Instead, it looks like they’re going to go for a touchdown.'” It is not the first time the analyst has made a mistake, and he has been criticized for it before as well . He recently shared his thoughts about a team. Kirk Herbstreit speaks on Indiana Herbstreit recently shared his thoughts about the Indiana Hoosiers on his podcast . He shared his thoughts that the offense is not more competent than expected. He said, “I thought in August they would be much more competent on offense than they’ve played up to this point. I don’t know about the health of Hoover, how real that is. But I still think there’s enough pieces around that team, and the defense… I can’t say definitively ‘yes, they’re in,” or ‘no, they’re not.’ They’re just one of those teams, like Ohio State and Utah and UCLA, all these teams.” He added, “I was much more confident in August what I was perceiving this offense to be than what I’ve seen after eight weeks, for sure.” Kirk Herbstreit will continue focusing on his work.
