Patrick Mahomes gets major Travis Kelce update with Chiefs hoping to halt two-game skid
Travis Kelce is fit to face the New York Jets this weekend as the Kansas City Chiefs hope to halt their two-game losing run. The Chiefs have slipped to second in the AFC West and need to return to winning ways against the 2-6 Jets at Arrowhead Stadium this evening. Patrick Mahomes and co opened up the new season by going five games undefeated but have lost to the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos in the last two weeks. Star tight end Kelce has been on the injury report for the Chiefs this week, tending to an ankle issue that has bothered him for several games. But after starting the week as questionable to face the Jets, Kelce practiced in full on Friday and has no designation for the Week 9 contest. The veteran superstar has been solid this season and will now face a Jets defence that has not been great against tight ends this year. Kelce is without a touchdown since Week 3 but Mahomes will likely look to utilise one of his favourite weapons heavily at Arrowhead as the Chiefs hope to retake top spot in the AFC West from the Broncos. The Chiefs’ 28-24 defeat in Colorado last weekend saw a dramatic ending. Kelce had a big catch and run for 32 yards to get the Chiefs into scoring territory late on in the fourth quarter and Mahomes then found Rashee Rice in the endzone for what would have been the winning score. But Jaylon Moore was called for a penalty and, as the visitors had to rerun the fourth and goal play, Mahomes was sacked to end the game. Reacting to the devastating penalty blow, Kelce said: “I mean it wasn’t our best performance, but we fought through some adversity there throughout the game, wish we would have finished it better. “Penalties will kill you in this league and right now we are killing ourselves in that regard. “I’m at the forefront. I think it’s my third week in a row I’ve had a procedural penalty that’s halted the drive or we’re going backwards instead of going forwards. “I’ve been doing this too long to be hurting my team like that and it’s just inexcusable. “Throughout the game, there were a lot of them that stopped drives that put us in tough positions and tough situations. “I love Jamo and Jamo knows we’re rocking with him every single day of the week, and he’ll fix it, just like I got to get mine fixed. “I’m not blaming it at all on penalties. We still got to execute in the run game, we had a bunch of chances down there in the red zone at the end to be able to punch it in. Just didn’t execute. “We got the looks that we were looking for on the majority of them and we just got to make a play, man. “It’s just unfortunate that it happened to a team like the Broncos who are now ahead of us in the standings for the division. “We’ve just got to make sure that we gear back up. “We can’t let this get us down. We’ve got to keep fighting, keep figuring out ways to win ball games and just know that we’ve got everything we need right here in the building to get that done.” The Chiefs host the Jets at 6pm UK time, 12pm local, and commentary of the Week 9 clash will be live on talkSPORT 2 .
