Sean McVay frustrated with kicker Harrison Mevis after missed field goals in OT loss to Bills, will 'evaluate everything'

Yahoo Sports
Harrison Mevis’ days with the Los Angeles Rams may be numbered. Rams head coach Sean McVay said after their wild 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night that they would “evaluate everything,” and specifically called out Mevis’ performance at SoFi Stadium. Mevis missed both of his field goal attempts on the night, including a potential game-winner in the extra period. “The kicking game, especially with our PAT field goal, not even close to good enough,” McVay said. “It cost us the game tonight … I’m going to evaluate everything.” Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal attempt wide left on the Rams’ first drive of the day, which put them in an early hole after the Bills’ 49-yard field goal on the opening drive of the contest. The second missed field goal, though, is what had McVay so upset. After a shootout in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, the Rams forced a fumble and made it into field goal range to set up what should have been a game-winning field goal for Mevis. But instead, the 48-yard attempt was blocked. That gave the Bills the ball back, and eventually led to Tyler Bass’ game-winning field goal on the other end. “I felt like I hit it good, that's all I can tell you,” Mevis said, via the California Post . “I hit it good, gave it a chance. I’ll have to look at it, I don’t know. They had a good rush game.” While it’s not fair to blame a blocked field goal entirely on the kicker, it only added to McVay’s frustration — especially since that led to them losing the game. Mevis is in his second season in the league this fall. The Rams signed him last year following a UFL stint after he went undrafted out of Missouri. The 24-year-old has made five of his nine field goal attempts this season, and he’s missed three of his last four. He is perfect on all 14 of his extra point attempts. It’s unclear if McVay is actually going to move on from Mevis and find a new kicker. His comments came immediately after a tough loss, and emotions were clearly high. But with how things have gone so far, Mevis very obviously has some work to do to secure his spot with the franchise.
