KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Namibia has failed to qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup Qualifier despite co-hosting the tournament.
They must now come through an eight-team playoff in Nepal from December 4 to 21.
Ireland and the Netherlands hosted matches at the 1999 World Cup without qualifying for it.
Namibia fails to qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup Qualifier
Namibia will co-host the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe , with six matches scheduled at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. They are now three tournaments away from playing in it.
Namibia finished outside the top four of the CWC League 2, which means they have missed direct entry to the World Cup Qualifier and must instead enter the Qualifier Play-off in Nepal.
South Africa and Zimbabwe, as Full Members, received automatic places as hosts. Namibia, an Associate, did not receive an automatic place, and the ICC pathway now requires them to win in Kathmandu, then in the Qualifier, and potentially a third time on their own ground in Windhoek.

How can Namibia still qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup?
The first stage is the CWC Qualifier Play-off in Nepal from December 4 to 21, 2026. Eight teams compete, with hosts Nepal joined by Namibia, Canada, the UAE, Jersey, Kuwait, Italy, and Uganda. Only the top four advance.
Those four then join the West Indies, Ireland, the USA, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Oman at the CWC Qualifier, staged across South Africa and Namibia from February 26 to March 11, 2027. Namibia could therefore host the tournament that decides their fate.
Winning that Qualifier outright earns a place in Group A at the World Cup alongside India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe. Second, third, and fourth place sends a team to the Super Series instead.
The Super Series is a three-team round robin in Namibia on October 2, 4, and 6, 2027, with only the top side progressing to Group B, where England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh are waiting. The other two are eliminated.
That is the full picture. Finish top four in Nepal, win the Qualifier, and Namibia is in Group A. Finish second, third, or fourth in the Qualifier, and they must win a three-team tournament at home in Windhoek in the opening week of the World Cup itself to reach Group B.

Has any host nation played host to a World Cup without qualifying?
Yes, and the precedent is recent enough to matter. The 1999 ODI World Cup was staged across England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and the Netherlands, with Ireland and the Netherlands each hosting a match despite failing to come through qualifying.
Only England received direct entry. Scotland, Ireland, and the Netherlands all had to take the qualification route as non-Full Members, and Scotland alone made it, becoming the first Associate nation to play a World Cup match on home soil.
Kenya in 2003 was a different case. They co-hosted alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe and qualified automatically because they held full ODI status, then reached the semi-finals, still the only non-Test nation to do so at a men's ODI World Cup.
The T20 World Cup has produced one comparable example. The 2021 edition was officially hosted by India but played in the UAE and Oman, and while Oman came through the qualifiers, the UAE did not. In 2024, the United States and West Indies both received automatic places as co-hosts.
