Hot mic picks up derogatory slur during Wild-Oilers broadcast
Yahoo Sports
A derogatory slur was heard during the Wild+ broadcast of Tuesday night’s game between the Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers.
It happened with 11:34 left in the second period. After a high-sticking penalty against Edmonton, the broadcast opened the feed to the referee’s mic for the penalty call, where a voice said , “Every goalie’s retarded,” followed by a laugh.
It’s unclear who made the remark or how the audio made it onto the broadcast.
There’s also no indication that anyone in the Wild broadcast booth heard it. Play-by-play announcer Anthony LaPanta and color commentator Ryan Carter didn’t react to the remark, and the game continued without any acknowledgment of what had been heard.
Online reactions suggest the audio was heard on Wild+ but not on Sportsnet, which carries Oilers games in Canada.
Bring Me The Sports has reached out to the Wild for an explanation.
The Wild rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime, but lost 4-3 to the Oilers.
