Sean Dyche rules out return to under-fire club after poor start to 2026/27 season
TalkSport

Sean Dyche has emphatically shut down talk of a possible return to Watford.
The Hornets’ revolving door for managers looks set to spin once more following a 4-0 loss to Burnley on Saturday.
It marked the club’s third straight defeat and left them hovering just one point above the Championship relegation zone.
Such was the nature of Watford’s performance, former owner Elton John weighed in on social media to express he was ‘very upset and disappointed at the decline’ in recent weeks.
The result has also heaped pressure on embattled boss Alessio Dionisi, who was appointed in the summer.
Given Watford’s tendency to swing the axe under the Pozzo ownership, having had 25 different permanent managers in the last 15 years, another loss under Dionisi’s watch could spell the end of his tenure.
Would Sean Dyche return to Watford?
Should that situation arise, some Hornets fans may clamour for Dyche’s appointment.
But the 55-year-old , who has stayed away from a dugout since he was axed by Nottingham Forest in February, only had one word to say about a potential return to Vicarage Road on talkSPORT’s Breakfast Show: “No.”
Dyche was the first manager to depart in the Pozzo era at Watford and was swiftly replaced by Gianfranco Zola in July 2012.
Intriguingly, Zola’s 75 games in charge of Watford remains the longest tenure of any manager under the Pozzo ownership.
The second-longest spell at the Hornets belongs to Javi Gracia, having overseen 66 games from January 2018 to September 2019 in his first stint at the club.
Ally McCoist’s verdict on Watford’s revolving door of managers
The constant hiring and firing of managers has led many to pin Watford with having a revolving door policy when it comes to the Vicarage Road hotseat.
Just last season, the Hornets churned through three different permanent managers as they finished 16th, only 10 points above the relegation zone.
Given the approach has brought little success, former Rangers boss and talkSPORT host Ally McCoist believed it was high time Watford learned to put their faith in the manager.
“It’s clearly not a success,” McCoist said on talkSPORT Breakfast.
“The one thing, particularly with young coaches at this moment, they don’t get enough time.”
As for Dyche, who has ‘no gripes’ with the Pozzo family, he admits the club has certainly changed from what it previously stood for.
“I get on well with people at Watford,” Dyche said.
“But I’ve got to say, there’s a lot of people, the real die-hards… quite a big number of people that remember not the way it was run, but what it stood for. A real community club, which the late, great, Graham Taylor, he’d become a legend for doing that. Now that’s all changed.
“Again, football moves on. I’ve got no gripes about the ownership, it did work at the beginning.
“But now, it’s been quite a long period when it’s not working and people are questioning more heavily.”
Watford will look to avoid sinking deeper into trouble when they travel to Cardiff City on Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm.
