Staal suffered a tear in his calf during warmups before Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 38-year-old forward was subsequently ruled out of the contest, and the Hurricanes announced that he would miss “significant time” as he recovers from the injury.
Although the team has not provided a specific timeline for his return, Staal could potentially be sidelined for a couple of months, leaving Carolina without one of its most important leaders during a crucial stretch of the season.

Staal faces extended absence after calf injury
The injury comes as a disappointment for Staal, who is entering his 21st NHL season and remains a central figure in Carolina’s leadership group.
Through the Hurricanes’ first six games of the campaign, Staal has yet to record a point. However, his value to the team extends far beyond offensive production, as he plays a vital role in the locker room and provides valuable experience in high-pressure situations.
Staal enjoyed a memorable campaign last season, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup playoffs while captaining Carolina to its first Stanley Cup championship in 20 years.
The veteran forward previously won a Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009, giving him experience winning championships with two different franchises.
Originally drafted by Pittsburgh, Staal spent the first six seasons of his NHL career with the Penguins before joining Carolina for the 2012-13 season. He has remained with the Hurricanes ever since, becoming one of the franchise’s most recognizable players.

Hurricanes look to maintain winning streak
Despite losing their captain, the Hurricanes enter the week playing some of their best hockey. Carolina has won five consecutive games and will look to extend that streak without Staal in the lineup.
His absence will challenge the team’s depth and leadership, particularly as the Hurricanes attempt to build on last season’s championship success.
Carolina hosts the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, providing its first opportunity to demonstrate how it will respond to the loss of its captain.
With Staal expected to miss significant time, the Hurricanes will need contributions from across the roster to maintain their momentum while their veteran leader focuses on recovering from his injury.
