Coach Marcus Freeman ’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish headed to Provo, Utah to take on BYU and fell behind 21-10 at halftime even with Marcus Gilbert’s insane one-hand catch . The Gilbert highlight gave way to lowlights as Leonard Miller got a concussion and QB CJ Carr made a huge mistake on an attempted spike. Carr attempted to spike the ball but dropped it. Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and others were in attendance as the ruling on the field was announced. The Fighting Irish struggled to keep up with a fired-up BYU team as the Cougars clung to their 11-point lead. Carr was outplayed by Bear Bachmeier as fans continued to wait for the Heisman Trophy contending version of the Notre Dame quarterback to find his rhythm. Bachmeier scored the game’s first touchdown, bringing a sea of blue shirts in the crowd to their feet. Bachmeier barreled straight ahead for a five-yard touchdown run from the shotgun that set the tone for how the first half went. BYU continued to excel on both offense and defense, just hours after a big injury update was announced on one of the team’s linebackers . Nolan James Jr. led the Fighting Irish rushing attack with 69 yards and a touchdown as of early in the second half while coach Kalani Sitake’s team sat on its 21-10 lead, continuing to possess the ball while driving Carr and the Irish offense crazy. Carr has the talent and the football IQ to lead his team back to the playoffs, but the gravity of the moment clearly got to him on his botched spike attempt. The Irish continued to battle, but it needed another touchdown or two with time ticking away in the third quarter.
