Ravens create $8.6M in cap space with Nnamdi Madubuike restructure
Yahoo Sports
The Baltimore Ravens have made another major financial adjustment after acquiring quarterback Jacoby Brissett, creating more than $8.6 million in salary cap space by restructuring defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike's contract.
According to Spotrac's Mike Ginnitti, Baltimore converted $11.5 million of Madubuike's remaining 2026 base salary into a signing bonus, reducing his current cap charge while pushing additional accounting costs into future seasons.
The transaction comes one day after the Ravens officially acquired Brissett from the Arizona Cardinals , adding an experienced quarterback following injuries to Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. Baltimore enters the final days before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline at 4-5, riding a four-game losing streak after Thursday night's 33-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Ravens create $8.6 million in salary cap flexibility
The restructuring changes how Madubuike's compensation counts against Baltimore's salary cap without reducing what the team owes the defensive lineman. By converting $11.5 million in base salary into a signing bonus, the Ravens can spread the cap accounting for that bonus across the remaining eligible years of his contract.
Spotrac lists Madubuike's updated 2026 cap charge at $21.2 million, $33.2 million for 2027, and a $16.6 million charge associated with a void year in 2028. The move creates more than $8.6 million in immediate cap relief, giving general manager Eric DeCosta additional flexibility after acquiring Brissett and potentially addressing other roster needs.
Baltimore received Brissett and a 2027 fifth-round pick from Arizona in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round selection and a 2028 seventh-round pick. The Cardinals also restructured Brissett's contract before completing the transaction, reducing the remaining base salary Baltimore inherited.
What restructuring means for Madubuike's future
The extra cap space provides short-term flexibility, but the Ravens are taking on larger future accounting obligations.
According to Spotrac, none of Madubuike's 2027 base salary is currently guaranteed, although his contract carries approximately $27.4 million in potential dead money against next season's cap. That creates an important distinction between Baltimore's immediate financial flexibility and the future consequences of moving money into signing bonuses.
Madubuike remains a key part of Baltimore's defensive front alongside Travis Jones and veteran Calais Campbell. His presence gives the Ravens an interior defender who can disrupt opposing running games and generate pressure.
The financial adjustment doesn't change his role on the field, but it gives Baltimore more room to navigate a difficult stretch of the season.
Will Ravens make another move before trade deadline?
The timing is notable with the NFL trade deadline approaching Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. ET.
Baltimore has already addressed its quarterback situation with Brissett, but the Ravens still face injuries and inconsistent play across the roster. Creating more than $8.6 million in cap space gives DeCosta options to absorb additional salary through a potential trade, address other transactions, or preserve flexibility for the remainder of the season.
The restructuring does not guarantee another acquisition, and Baltimore has not announced a corresponding move.
However, after four consecutive losses and with its playoff hopes under pressure, the Ravens have gained additional financial resources to address their roster before the deadline.
Whether Baltimore uses that flexibility for another trade or retains it for the remainder of the season remains to be seen.
