Shedeur Sanders may have thought his smile was harmless. However, the New Orleans Saints are apparently taking it as extra motivation ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, head coach Kellen Moore highlighted a viral clip of Sanders during a team meeting. That gave New Orleans’ defense some unexpected bulletin board material as it prepares to welcome Cleveland to the Caesars Superdome. The video showed Sanders being asked whether he had studied the Saints’ defense. Rather than offering a conventional scouting breakdown, the Browns quarterback responded with a knowing grin and an intriguing explanation. “Yeah I seen a lot, when I smile just know that means something,” Sanders said. “I’m maturing, you know what I’m saying, I’m maturing, I could have gave that a decent answer but now I’m just gonna smile when it’s some questions.” Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial) Sanders may simply have been having fun with reporters. The clip, though, reportedly generated plenty of discussion inside New Orleans’ facility. Veteran defenders such as Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson will have an opportunity to respond on the field Sunday. The Saints enter Week 9 at 2-5. They are desperate to reverse a disappointing season. Their 2026 campaign has featured inconsistent offensive production, defensive struggles, and an alarming 0-3 record at home. Injuries, including the loss of running back Travis Etienne Jr., have further complicated Moore’s first season in charge. Coming off their Week 8 bye, New Orleans has also made coaching and personnel adjustments. Facing the Browns now present an opportunity to reset their season. Whether Sanders intended to motivate his opponents or not, his smile has certainly gotten their attention. The Saints will have their chance to make their response count on Sunday.
