Carolina Hurricanes Finally Sign Stanley Cup Winning Defenceman
Yahoo Sports

After a long negotiation period, the Alexander Nikishin contract has finally been signed with the Carolina Hurricanes on a one-year deal worth $3 million. This ends a stalemate that had lasted throughout the offseason and through the first few weeks of the 2026-27 season.
Nikishin Contract is a Reality After Long Stalemate
“We’re glad that Alexander is returning to our group,” Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said in a press release . “This has been a long process, but we look forward to him re-entering our locker room ready to contribute with the Hurricanes, as he did during a Stanley Cup championship season last year.”
Nikishin had been rumoured to be looking for a long-term contract with a hefty cap hit. He struggled in the 2026-27 Stanley Cup Playoffs, with just one point in 17 games, and did not earn the trust of the head coach as his ice time dipped below 15 minutes a night, although he did record 33 points in the regular season. As a result of the negotiation stalemate, as well as potentially not fitting in with Brind’Amour’s style of play, the Alexander Nikishin rumours would persist, and reportedly led to him requesting a trade.
With this one-year deal, it pushes the tough negotiations to a later time, as he will still be a restricted free agent after this deal ends. It also opens a path for Nikishin to get traded, as his current cap hit is a very palatable one at $3 million.
The Last Word
This move is one that comes as a benefit for both the Hurricanes and Nikishin, because it creates flexibility for both parties. If Nikishin still wants out at some point, he needs to play and showcase his talents as an aggressive, offensive-minded defenceman. If the Hurricanes do end up circling back to Nikishin in hopes of a long-term deal, that can still be done. At least for now, this stalemate can come to an end. The Hurricanes have been diligent with their contract signings , such as the Jordan Staal signing , so they clearly wanted this saga not to loom over them.
