Chiefs Dodge Bigger Scare As $6.4 Million OT’s Update Drops After Painful Exit
Yahoo Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs kept their perfect record intact with a convincing 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, cementing their status as the AFC’s lone remaining unbeaten team at 5-0.
However, head coach Andy Reid had to manage multiple injuries throughout the game, including right tackle Jaylon Moore entering the concussion protocol, Travis Kelce tweaking his ankle and wide receiver Jalen Royals leaving for a medical evaluation.
The final scare came late in the fourth quarter when the Chiefs’ $6.4 million left guard left the field in clear pain, leaving fans waiting for a postgame update.
Andy Reid gives Kingsley Suamataia calf injury update
Kingsley Suamataia caught a stray cleat or knee directly to his calf while blocking late in the fourth quarter. The impact forced the starting left guard to limp off the field so trainers could evaluate him on the sideline. Backup Mike Caliendo filled in at left guard for a few plays during that drive.
However, the injury was short-lived. Suamataia was able to check back into the matchup to finish the game, and head coach Andy Reid dismissed long-term concerns postgame, saying , “Then, Kingsley got kicked in the calf, but he should be OK.”
Reid did not provide a recovery timeline, and Suamataia’s quick return to the game indicated he would not need one. Even so, the brief exit showed how thin the Chiefs are on the offensive line. Right tackle Jaylon Moore’s concussion had already forced Joshua Ezeudu into the lineup, leaving Caliendo as the main interior backup if Suamataia’s calf tightens up later in the week.
Suamataia, a third-year lineman, was Kansas City’s No. 63 overall pick in 2024 out of BYU. He carries a four-year rookie contract worth about $6.4 million, signed through the 2027 season. The Chiefs drafted him to play left tackle, and some coverage still lists him as an OT. Reid pulled him mid-game against Cincinnati in Week 2 of 2024 after Trey Hendrickson beat him repeatedly. Suamataia posted a 37.9 PFF overall grade that year as a rookie tackle.
The move inside to left guard in 2025 changed his trajectory. PFF graded him as the No. 26 guard as a pass blocker, and he took over the spot after the Chiefs traded Joe Thuney to Chicago.
This calf injury is not Suamataia’s first health scare. Last season, he entered the concussion protocol during a Week 11 loss to the Broncos but recovered in time to play the next game against the Colts.
His health is crucial now because he just regained his role. Reid benched him for the Week 4 win at Las Vegas, letting Caliendo play every snap. The coach declined to provide a reason for the benching but confirmed Suamataia’s return before Sunday’s game, stating, “Yeah, he’ll be back in.”
Kansas City travels to Seattle for Week 7, and practice participation this week will show how his calf is holding up.
