Beake worked for the Denver Broncos front office from 1979 to 2000, including 14 seasons as general manager from 1985 to 1998. Denver reached five Super Bowls during his tenure and won two back-to-back titles in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
In its official statement, the team shared , “We’re saddened by the loss of former Broncos General Manager John Beake, who passed away at the age of 87. Beake, who was with the Broncos from 1979-2000, guided the organization’s front office to five Super Bowl appearances, including our back-to-back victories in SB XXXII & SB XXXIII.”
He started with Denver in 1979 as director of pro personnel. Before that, he coached as an assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs, winning Super Bowl IV, and the New Orleans Saints. He also spent the 1975 season as the offensive coordinator for Colorado State.
Denver promoted Beake to director of player personnel in 1981. In that role, he helped negotiate the 1983 trade with the Baltimore Colts that brought quarterback John Elway to Denver. Elway later reached the Hall of Fame and captained the Broncos to both of their late-90s championships.
Denver won its first title in Super Bowl XXXII following a 12-4 regular season, and captured Super Bowl XXXIII after going 14-2. During that second championship run, the Broncos won all three playoff games by double digits. During his tenure, the franchise won seven division titles and made 12 playoff appearances.
Beake moved into the role of vice president of administration in 1999, serving through the 2000 season. He left the organization in late 2000 to manage football operations for NFL Europe. He retired from the league in 2004 after roughly 35 years in the NFL, later serving on the Broncos Ring of Fame selection committee.
Beake is survived by his wife, Marcia, and his sons, Chip and Chris. His daughter, Jerilyn, passed away in 2017.
