Florida State’s Norvell Fired With $50M Left on Contract

Following three straight losses, Florida State has decided to move on from coach Mike Norvell. The seventh-year Seminoles coach’s tenure ends with a 41–39 record. He will be owed $50.3 million , which is subject to offset and mitigation, the most expensive in the coaching carousel this season. The amount is the third-highest buyout in college football history behind Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher (2023, near $77 million) and LSU’s Brian Kelly (2025, $54 million). Norvell’s dismissal follows months of speculation about his future. Earlier this week, Florida State president Richard McCullough wrote an apology letter to fans, which stated, “We are not asking you to believe that everything is fine. We know it isn’t.” After leading the team to the ACC title in 2023, Norvell signed an eight-year, $84 million extension. The Seminoles have gone 10–22 since. The team lost again in Tallahassee on Saturday, falling to Clemson to go 3–5. During the game, a plane flew a banner overhead reading “Fire Novell.” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney stood up for his counterpart while taking them to task for the missspelling: “Didn’t even have the freaking R in the name.” He continued: “Whoever did that, man, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.” The post Florida State’s Norvell Fired With $50M Left on Contract appeared first on Front Office Sports .
