The Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers were well represented in Mexico City on Saturday. Both squads chose a player to address the lively crowd inside Arena CDMX, and do so in Spanish. Aaron Gordon, who grew up in California and spent a year at the University of Arizona, sported a big grin on his face as he expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the chance to play in this annual NBA matchup. Former Houston Cougars star Jarace Walker was a bit more concise. He celebrated his bilingual triumph with his teammates immediately afterwards. Both players were probably nervous, as is completely normal, but they deserve credit for mentally committing themselves to another language shortly before opening tipoff. Judging by their applause, the fans in attendance seemed to appreciate the gesture. Gordon and Walker were not the only ones who stepped up in Mexico. Cam Johnson scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting in the Nuggets’ 114-102 win versus the Pacers, while Spencer Jones dropped 13 points, six rebounds and one block in 13 minutes of play. Nikola Jokic pushed through a rough shooting display, going 7-of-20 from the field, but he still made an impact abroad, recording a team-high 19 points, 13 boards and eight assists. Jamal Murray turned in a well-rounded stat line himself, posting 16 points (6-of-13), eight dimes and six rebounds. The Pacers, who are still without star point guard Tyrese Haliburton , fought valiantly in the high altitude despite falling short. Pascal Siakam scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting, Ivica Zubac notched a double-double and Larry Nance Jr, matched a career high with five made 3-pointers off the bench. Indy’s signature spunk was not enough on this night, or in this country, however. The Nuggets (5-3) and Pacers (3-7) will both head to Texas following the Mexico City Game, which should give Aaron Gordon and Jarace Walker another opportunity to flex their Spanish-speaking skills.
