Andre Onana goes from hero to zero in nightmare Conference League moment
Andre Onana had another moment to forget as he conceded directly from a corner in the Conference League for Trabzonspor. The Manchester United loanee started in his first European game of the season as the Turkish outfit claimed a 4-2 victory over Finnish side Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS). After falling out of favour at Old Trafford, Onana is now into his second season on loan at Trabzonspor . However, the Cameroonian did himself no favours on Thursday night when he was unable to keep out a corner. Trabzonspor found themselves 3-0 up and cruising after 47 minutes, with Mohamed Salah getting on the scoresheet. Ex-Southampton striker Paul Onuachu grabbed the opener, before Liverpool great Salah doubled their lead with a trademark finish into the far corner – with this his eighth goal since his summer arrival . Onana’s blunder In the 54th minute, KuPS pulled a goal back when veteran midfielder Petteri Pennanen’s in-swinging corner beat Onana and found the net. Pennanen whipped in a dangerous delivery that evaded both sets of players in the box, which the United loanee then failed to keep out. With the ball flying in at the far post, Onana lay on the ground in despair as his teammates walked on and left him to pick himself up. Onana made amends by saving a penalty shortly after, diving to his right to keep the strike out before watching the rebound soar over the bar. And Trabzonspor went on to add to their lead as Dju put the game beyond doubt with a goal in second-half stoppage time. Trailing 4-1, KuPS then grabbed a late consolation through ex-Bristol City forward Gustav Engvall. Fans react to Onana howler While Trabzonspor came away unscathed, Onana’s error was the major talking point among fans. The 30-year-old failed to convince during his two years as Man United’s No.1 following his 2023 move. He conceded 150 goals in 102 appearances for the club, often looking shaky in goal, and fans were quick to pounce on his latest blunder. Reacting to footage online, one fan commented: “Imagine where Utd would be if this dude was still there.” Another wrote: “Do not miss this man, no matter how bad we are.” Referring to Man United’s current woes , a third added: “As bad as things are at the moment… it could be worse.” Onana will now be looking to bounce back immediately for Trabzonspor in their next match, as they take on Turkish giants Besiktas in the league on Monday night.
