Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Barclays Women’s Super League with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon.
A brace from Alessia Russo helped The Gunners to record just their third league win of the season.
Vivien Endemann had an early chance for the hosts, but her shot fizzled wide of goal.
At the other end, Russo made the perfect run down the pitch with the ball and found Lisa Baum. Baum tried to get the shot away, but it hit the crossbar.
Olivia Smith then fired wide before Russo opened the scoring for The Gunners. Emily Fox swung the ball in and Russo struck it into the back of the net.
It wasn’t long before Liverpool equalised. Beata Olsson was left with space and she sent a powerful strike into the bottom corner.
It very easily could have been two for The Reds. Jenna Clark got on the end of a corner kick delivery, but the Arsenal defence did well to clear.
Natalia Ramos then stood over a free-kick and sent it perfectly towards the goal, but Misa Rodríguez got a glove to the ball and diverted it over the bar.
Liverpool continued to push for a second goal. Clark collected a low delivery and slotted the ball past Misa, but the flag went up for offside.
Arsenal responded and Caitlin Foord fired into the side-netting before Georgia Stanway did the same.
Russo then got her second goal of the game and it felt a long time coming. Fox sent the ball in the direction of Baum and Russo was waiting and knocked it straight past Khiara Keating.
Cornelia Kapocs got into the Arsenal box, but she couldn’t convert her chance into anything before Kim Little had an attempt at goal, but her shot was well-caught by Keating.
Russo could have secured a hat-trick when Stanway passed her the ball, but Keating got a slight hand to it and kept it out of the forward’s reach.
Alice Bergstrom had the perfect opportunity to level for Liverpool, but her shot was well-blocked as the visitors ended the game 2-1 winners.
Liverpool travel to Brighton & Hove Albion for their next Barclays Women’s Super League fixture on Saturday while Arsenal play host to London City Lionesses next Sunday.
