‘Not his fault’ – Chargers QB Justin Herbert defends OC Mike McDaniel after 0-6 start
Yahoo Sports

Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert came to the defence of under-fire offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel after a 0-6 start to the 2026-27 NFL season.
The Chargers are the only remaining winless team in the NFL this season, starting the season 0-6 with their playoff hopes getting crushed before the end of October.
The franchise has to find a way to steady the ship to even have a chance at having a respectable end to the season. Head coach John Harbaugh will continue trusting OC Mike McDaniel going forward, and it’s a call starting QB Justin Herbert agrees with.
Justin Herbert defends Mike McDaniel by blaming Chargers execution
Herbert was asked about the scrutiny McDaniel is under and coach Harbaugh’s decision to stick with the winless Chargers OC going forward, with the 28-year-old QB defending McDaniel and blaming the players.
“It’s not his fault. It’s our fault as an offence. We have to do our job. The guys are open. Plays are being made. It’s on us to run, to block, to catch, to throw. It’s on us as an offence.”
The Chargers rank last in points per game and are near the bottom of almost every efficiency metric. While injuries to the offensive line can be blamed, going winless has brought a lot of negative attention to both McDaniel and Herbert.
McDaniel is in his first season with the Chargers, brought in to revolutionise the team’s out-of-touch offensive system after his success with the Miami Dolphins.
However, that seems to have backfired, with his overly complex plays not creating the impact everyone hoped for, complicating the offence for an already-struggling team.
Herbert knows he is to blame as well, going 107-of-180 on pass attempts this season for 1,141 yards. He has a poor passer rating (68.8), has more interceptions (8) than touchdowns (5), and has a career-low completion percentage.
McDaniel’s schemes have been clunky and complicated, while Herbert has struggled to have any impact with a battered offensive line in front of him. There are several factors behind the Chargers’ struggles, and they’ll hope to iron them all out in the next few weeks.
