Patriots legend admits Rob Gronkowski influenced his decision to extend Patriots career
Matt Light has revealed that Rob Gronkowski played a part in convincing him to delay retirement and spend another season with the New England Patriots. The former Patriots offensive tackle had considered hanging up his boots after his 10th NFL season but changed his mind after developing a close bond with the legendary tight end. Light ultimately stayed for another campaign, giving him more time alongside Gronkowski during their run together in New England. Matt Light reveals why he wanted another season with Rob Gronkowski Speaking on NBC Sports Boston, Light explained that Gronkowski’s arrival influenced his decision to continue playing. “After my 10th season, you know, and feeling very fortunate to spend my entire career in New England, and I was thinking about hanging it up, but that was my first year with Gronk, and I thought, you know what, man, I gotta have at least one more with this cat,” Light said. He admitted that several factors contributed to his decision, but spending more time with Gronkowski was certainly among them. “That’s a fact. I mean, look, there were other things that went into it, but that was definitely a thought process, and I’m so glad I did. I mean, you know, look, we didn’t win it all that year, but we came as close as you can get, and it was a special time. I mean, I got a lot of great memories, you know, being with him is one of them.” Gronkowski joined the Patriots in 2010 after being selected 42nd overall in the NFL Draft. Light, who had been drafted nine years earlier, helped the young tight end adjust to life in the league. Gronkowski later acknowledged that support, explaining how Light took him under his wing and taught him aspects of playing in the run game. Their relationship extended beyond football, with the pair sharing experiences away from the field and maintaining their friendship after Light retired. The offensive tackle eventually stepped away from the NFL in 2012, following the Patriots’ Super Bowl XLVI defeat to the New York Giants. Light cited the physical demands of the game and the growing difficulty of recovering as he got older, explaining that football was leaving him with little energy for his family. Their connection remains strong. With Gronkowski set to enter the Patriots Hall of Fame, the pair have joined forces for a sweepstakes supporting their respective charities, the Light Foundation and the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation.
