Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after his terrifying collapse at Bayern Munich’s training ground.
The 40-year-old was airlifted to hospital last Friday with medical staff working tirelessly to try and discover what the cause of Kompany’s health scare was.
It’s been revealed that Manchester City legend Kompany was diagnosed with meningeal irritation.
The mengines are the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal chord which, when irritated, can trigger painful muscle spasms.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the news as he also revealed he expects Kompany to be back on the touchline soon, although the Belgian will not be rushed back .
Cause of Kompany health scare confirmed
Eberl told German publication ARD: “I think this is the biggest and best news for all of us. They have found what it is.
“It’s meningeal irritation that caused this incident last Friday.
“He has now been allowed to go home, where he can continue his rehabilitation. In his case, rehabilitation means rest and medication.
“I am very, very confident that he will soon be back on the sidelines, operating at 100 per cent.
“[He will get] all the time he needs – we’ve said that all along. That is why, from the very beginning, we spoke in terms of weeks.”
It’s reported that Kompany fell unconscious and experienced convulsions while also dislocating his shoulder when he collapsed.
Kompany’s assistant Aaron Danks took charge of Bayern for their win over Freiburg last Sunday, as well as their DFB-Pokal clash at home to Magdeburg.
Former Burnley and Anderlecht boss Kompany has been in the Bayern hotseat since 2024, leading them to two Bundesliga titles and three domestic cups.
He has played a role in developing Harry Kane’s game even further, culminating in the England captain winning the Ballon d’Or on Monday.
In his acceptance speech, Kane issued a well-wishing message to Kompany while also paying tribute to his Bayern teammates.
Kane said: “The way you guys push me, the way we compete, me against (Dayot Upamecano) in training every week, it makes me a better player, makes me want to improve.
“To Vinny (Kompany), I think he’s at home or still in the hospital — wishing you very well and hope this has given you a bit of energy.”
Kompany’s final game before his collapse saw the Bundesliga champions play out an entertaining 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal in the Champions League two days prior.
Bayern are top of the Bundesliga with 17 points from seven matches, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference.
However, the two sides face off in the latest edition of Der Klassiker on Saturday at the Allianz Arena.
As for their European exploits, Bayern are 14th in the table with five points from three games with their next outing seeing them travel to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
